 The Latest Port Jeff News:

BEACHES

Work has begun down at the Crystal Brook Hollow cul de sac where Terry Contracting is beginning work on the seawall, beach revetment, and road repair. Plantings and finishing touches will be done prior to the harsh weather. the Village is still waiting for final FEMA and SEMO approval to begin the restoration projects at East Beach.

In the interim, the Department of Public Works will begin to connect Suffolk County Water to the restroom facilities at West Beach where we are abandoning the old well so we can upgrade the bathrooms and showers for next season. Stay tuned!

PHONE BOOTHS RESTORED

The Village has hired American Repair Service Corp to restore the red phone booths at Arden Place & Main and Thompson & East Main Streets. American will power wash, repaint and restore the Dickens phone booths and the Village will begin utilizing them as information booths with an internal billboard. The booths will have solar powered lights that will turn on at dusk and off at dawn and the current “telephone”signage will be replaced with www.portjeff.com.

Our red booths will be “shimmering” just in time for Dickens!

 

ROAD REPAIR

At the September 24th, 2012 Board Meeting, the Mayor and Trustees awarded the second road repair project to Kings Park Industries. Beginning this fall and into next spring, new drainage and road reconstruction will begin on Old Post from California to Main Street; Thompson Street, from Belle Terre Road to East Main Street; Winston from the East Beach traffic circle to Crystal Brook Hollow; and Arlington and Beach Streets.

Of course our own Department of Public Works will continue to pave smaller stretches of road within the Village. For any road concerns, please call the DPW at 631-473-4733.

Class of ’62 Reunion

Graduates from the Class of 1962 gathered at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School on Friday, Sept. 14 for their 50-year reunion. The three-day event began with a greeting and tour of the high school given by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert and Facilities Director Fred Koebel. Festivities continued Saturday night with a dinner at the Port Jefferson Village Center and concluded with brunch at Schafer’s Restaurant on Sunday morning.

Over 50 people attended and a great time was had by all!!

Estuary Day at Port Jefferson Harbor

The Maritime Explorium is hosting a day of family fun and education in Port Jefferson at the Harbor area adjacent to the Village Center. From noon to 4 PM on Saturday, September 29th, the public is invited to take part in a series of free events. You will learn a lot.

Explore a touch tank of marine animals courtesy of Stony Brook Yacht Club, with Chris Magdison. Join Eileen Gerle, Town of Brookhaven West Meadow Beach Ranger and educator in creating some wonderful fish prints. Take a shore walk with educator Kathy O’Sullivan and discover interesting things about shells, rocks and beach plants. Visit the Bayles Boat Shop and see the boats being built. Find out how you can join Coastal Steward Dave Johnson’s oyster restoration project and beach cleanups. Meet Bill Wise Chairman, Director of the Marine Science Research Center (SOMAS) at SUNY Stonybrook.

Added excitement will be provided by the Port Jefferson Library explaining the environmental research tools available there. The Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council will have related poetry readings, and the LINPI, Long Island Native Plant Initiative will share information about native ecotype plants.

Being the hosts and organizers of this event, Port Jefferson’s Maritime Explorium will also give free admission on Saturday to their creative museum. Visitors there can design and build a water filtration system if they like or build a biome. With a $5 donation they can even release a baby Horseshoe Crab into the harbor. If you wonder why the event is called Estuary Day, Port Jefferson Harbor is an Estuary which is defined as an ecosystem with open sea water which enters to the rhythm of the tides and is diluted by freshwater flowing from rivers and streams. You’ve learned something already.
